Unable to update the Minecraft Native Launcher
If you are trying to update your Vanilla Minecraft launcher but come across the error from the screenshot above, it means something went wrong with the installation process due to corrupted Minecraft files or software incompatibilities.
Resolving the issue
• Try installing the new Minecraft launcher in the C: drive and see if it resolves the issue. To install it on a different drive, you need to download Minecraft from the Microsoft store, then run the installer, and then choose the drive.
• If the same issue persists, try reinstalling or repairing Minecraft. Corrupt and broken files are, at times, the cause of the error. Reinstalling Minecraft or using repair tools remove corrupt files. If you do not know how to repair application on Windows, do the following:
- Hold the Windows key and press R.
- Type in appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
- Find Minecraft from the programs list.
- Right-click on Minecraft and select the repair option. If there are any more instructions on the screen, make sure you follow them.
If you want to reinstall Minecraft, do the following:
- Hold the Windows key and press R.
- Type in appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
- Find Minecraft from the programs list.
- Right-click on Minecraft and select the Uninstall option. If there are any more instructions on the screen, make sure you follow them.
- Download Minecraft from the Xbox program.
• Additionally, make sure to disable incompatible software and your antivirus temporarily while downloading the new Minecraft Launcher update. Antiviruses are known to block processes used by games or disrupt their operations. If you do not know how to disable your computer's antivirus temporarily, follow the instructions below:
-
Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings.
-
Switch Real-time protection to Off.
If you are using third-party antivirus software, follow the instructions given on the manufacturer's website to disable your antivirus.
Problems caused by the launcher update

- Open the Minecraft Directory. It's located here: %appdata%/minecraft.
- Create a copy of the launcher_profiles.json file.
- Delete the launcher_profiles_microsoft_store.json file.
- Rename the copied version of the launcher_profiles.json file to launcher_profiles_microsoft_store.json
